Breaking the Binary

Founded in 2015, Breaking the Binary works to support non-binary people, a marginalised sector of the LGBT+ community. It is a unique project in Wales, hoping to bring non-binary people together.

Breaking the Binary hosts weekly sessions at the Unity LGBT Centre, providing a social space and support group to non-binary people. These provide an opportunity for non-binary people to talk about challenges and issues they are facing and to make use of a network of support from other non-binary individuals. They also conduct fortnightly socials that range in activities, having hosted brunch, arts and crafts, and a drag party. These activities are open to family, friends, partners, and allies.

Breaking the Binary also raises awareness of their group and the non-binary community as a whole. They launched Swansea Sparkle 2015, Wales’ largest event for the trans community and were at an information fair at Swansea University for International Day against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia. We are also working with a local non-binary artist to host a number of workshops at the Unity Centre leading to a carnival later in the summer, envisaged to be a march for Non-binary Pride.

They promote volunteerism by encouraging participants to take on responsibilities and roles appropriate for their existing skills and/or experience. They apply that knowledge to help coordinate, manage and grow Breaking the Binary projects. Funds from the Alec Dickson Trust went to helping Breaking the Binary to cover running costs for their social events.
